10 ways you can repurpose your blogs
We’re all strapped for time and cash right now, meaning we need to start working smarter, not harder. We don’t have time to be creating every single piece of content from scratch all the time, and why should we?
Most of us are sitting on a vault of content already. It’s time to switch the focus from creating more to doing more with what we already have. Let’s stop creating content for the sake of it when we can work smarter, and repurpose our existing content.
The beauty of repurposing
Content overwhelms us, it’s everywhere. If you just take ads, we’re exposed to around 10,000 every single day. Who has the time, or the brain power, to think up that much content? I know I don’t.
So what I do, is I repurpose what I have. Repurposing in its simplest form is chopping up your existing content and republishing it differently. The best thing to repurpose? Blogs. They’re juicy, they’ve got depth, and they’re so versatile making them the ideal piece of content to spread far and wide.
Here are 10 ways you can repurpose your blogs into brand-new content with minimal effort. It’s a win-win.
Turn blogs into social media posts
This is the easiest method of repurposing. Take this blog - there are 10 tips, each one of those can become a standalone social media post. Add in a summary post and a promotional one and you’ve got 12 posts from one blog.
Space those out across your content calendar and you can see how your feed will quickly fill up just from this one piece of content.
2. Inspire your newsletter
Stuck for a newsletter idea? Take the theme of a blog or one specific aspect on it and explore it, adding in a story for a personal touch. You can then link out to the blog in case people want to read more.
This approach kills 2 birds with 1 stone - you’re promoting your blog but you’re also creating a valuable newsletter to send to your audience.
Gold star if you get into the habit of creating the email at the same time as writing the blog.
3. Talking head video
If you’re dabbling in video then this is an easy one for you. Grab a camera and a tripod and talk directly to it, exploring the topic of the blog. You could break it down and do a video per tip like the social media posts above, or you could do a top-line summary of the blog topic.
Feeling fancy? Grab someone else and you can debate the topic going into more depth on one specific angle.
Either way, turning those static posts or blogs into videos is another easy way to create more content from your existing bank.
4. Create and share an infographic
Not everyone likes words, for some they’re visual thinkers and an infographic is far more powerful. You can work with a graphic designer to pull out key statements, ideas or stats and create a visual representation of your blog.
Then you can embed that into the blog along with sharing it on social media. Taking your original message and changing the way the information is presented opens it up to a wider audience maximising your impact.
5. Turn it into a lead magnet
Some blog topics lend themselves naturally to a lead magnet. Take this blog as an example, I could repackage it into a framework template to repurpose your content. A few nips and tucks and I’ve got a shiny new lead magnet.
Sometimes repurposing isn’t about directly copying and pasting but instead taking the research and learnings from your copy and packing them up differently.
Your blog can then become part of your marketing for that lead magnet with a big shiny call-to-action at the end to download your lead magnet to put your advice into action.
6. Contribute to guest blogs
This idea falls under both promotion and repurposing. Industry publications often ask for guest blogs for their sites, you can take a blog you’ve already written, edit it, give it a new headline and offer it out for guest blogs.
The advantage of this is that you’ve already done the work so you’re cutting down on your research time plus you’re utilising opportunities to boost your brand awareness.
Just be sure you aren’t copying and pasting exactly the same blog onto other people’s sites, at least not without tagging it as non-canonical.
7. Host a webinar
Can you take the core theme from your blog and turn it into a webinar? If it’s an interesting, relevant topic you can bring others from your industry together and to drill down into it and debate the issue.
This is a great way to bring your copy to life and take it to a next level. To complete the repurposing circle, you can then turn the transcript from the webinar into another blog including the different perspectives or questions.
Don’t forget to include a call-to-action for webinar attendance on the bottom of your first blog…..and remember to change it once the event has passed.
8. Pull out stats and statements for impact posts
We’ve already discussed using chunks of your blog for posts but this is more specific. Are there any statement quotes or statistics that you could extract from your blog post and turn into high-impact posts?
This is about finding those headline-grabbing tidbits and creating high-impact visuals to grab attention.
Be sure to reference your blog as the source for those soundbites to refer traffic back to your website if they want more information.
9. Theme your podcast episodes
This is similar to the webinar idea, but can you use the topic of your blogs to theme your podcasts? It might be that you explore the topic in more depth, or you bring someone else into the conversation to add another perspective.
Taking inspiration from your blog for your podcast eliminates a lot of the research you’d need to do and again allows signposting between your podcast and your blog to cross-promote your platforms.
10. Dig deeper
Sometimes you find a blog topic that doesn’t fit into one blog alone. When you find those chunky topics, turn them into a series of blogs. You do the research once and then you chunk it up, along the lines of chapters in a book.
Not only are you going to increase your chances of getting return viewers (you can always ask them to sign up to your mailing list to be notified when the next chapter drops), you’re also showing off your expertise by covering a relevant topic in such depth.
While this isn’t strictly a repurposing idea, it’s a way to make the most of your time, research and expertise while creating valuable content for your audience.
I’m a huge fan of repurposing. It’s a way of making the most of every asset you already have and allowing you to create more content without creating more from scratch. We’re all stretched for time so make the most of what you have. Focus on creating the highest quality blog you can and then repurpose it to inspire the rest of your content.
